Overview
When You Need Dry Needling
Dry needling works well for persistent muscle tightness that does not respond to stretching or massage alone. It is commonly used for neck and upper back tension from desk work in Calgary office towers, chronic hip and glute tightness in runners, and stubborn trigger points in the shoulder after sports injuries. If you have a muscle knot that keeps coming back, dry needling addresses it directly.
Signs You Should Come In
- ✔ Persistent muscle knots or trigger points
- ✔ Neck or upper back tightness from desk work
- ✔ Hip, glute, or calf tightness in runners or cyclists
- ✔ Shoulder or arm pain from sports overuse
- ✔ Muscle pain that returns after massage or stretching
How It Works
Our Dry Needling Process
Mahveen assesses the affected muscles and identifies active trigger points before needling. A very thin, sterile needle is inserted into the trigger point — most patients feel a brief local twitch or ache, followed by a release of tension. Sessions are typically 20 to 40 minutes and are combined with manual therapy or exercise in the same appointment. Most patients notice improvement within one to three sessions.

Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?
They use the same needles but have different goals. Dry needling targets specific muscle trigger points to release tension and reduce pain. Acupuncture is based on traditional Chinese medicine meridian theory.
Does it hurt?
You may feel a brief twitch or cramp when the needle hits a trigger point — this is normal and usually releases quickly. Most patients tolerate it well and feel relief after the session.
How many sessions does dry needling take?
Many patients feel improvement after 1 to 3 sessions when combined with exercise therapy. It is most effective as part of a broader treatment plan.
Is dry needling covered by extended health?
Yes. Dry needling provided by a registered physiotherapist is covered by most extended health plans. We direct bill.
