Overview
When You Need Joint Mobilization
Stiff, painful joints that limit movement are the primary reason for joint mobilization. Neck joints that restrict head rotation, shoulder joints frozen from injury or surgery, hip and knee stiffness after replacement surgery, and ankle or foot joints restricted from injury all respond well to skilled mobilization. If joint stiffness is limiting your life — driving, sleeping, working — mobilization is a safe, effective treatment.
Signs You Should Come In
- ✔ Restricted joint range of motion from injury or surgery
- ✔ Neck or back stiffness after an MVA
- ✔ Shoulder, hip, or knee stiffness post-surgery
- ✔ Joint pain that worsens with movement
- ✔ Stiffness that has not improved with stretching or rest
How It Works
Our Joint Mobilization Process
We assess which joints are restricted and how movement is affected before treating. Mobilization involves applying graded, oscillating movements to the joint — the grade and speed are matched to your pain tolerance and the stage of your recovery. We combine mobilization with soft tissue work and exercises to maintain the gains achieved during treatment. MVA and WCB patients are direct billed.

Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What is joint mobilization?
Joint mobilization uses skilled, graded passive movements at a joint to reduce stiffness and pain, restore range of motion, and improve function. It is a core physiotherapy technique.
Is joint mobilization the same as chiropractic adjustment?
They both work at joints, but joint mobilization is typically slower and graded — ranging from gentle oscillations to higher-grade movements. Both can be appropriate depending on your condition.
Is it painful?
Grade 1 and 2 mobilizations are very gentle. Higher grades may feel some pressure at end range. We always work within your tolerance and stop immediately if you have sharp pain.
Is joint mobilization covered by extended health?
Yes. Joint mobilization within a physiotherapy session is covered by most extended health plans. We direct bill.
