Overview

When You Need Lymphatic Drainage Massage

Swelling that does not go down after surgery, injury, or an illness involving the lymphatic system is the most common reason to seek lymphatic drainage. Post-surgical patients — especially after knee or hip replacement — often benefit from lymphatic drainage to manage swelling in the early recovery phase. Patients with chronic lymphedema or swelling from a medical condition also find regular sessions helpful.

Signs You Should Come In

  • ✔ Swelling after surgery that is not clearing on its own
  • ✔ Post-surgical lymphedema
  • ✔ Swelling from injury that is slow to resolve
  • ✔ Chronic lymphedema requiring ongoing management
  • ✔ Swelling limiting your physiotherapy progress

How It Works

Our Lymphatic Drainage Massage Process

The technique uses very light, rhythmic strokes following the direction of lymphatic flow in the body. It is much gentler than regular massage — the pressure is intentionally light to stimulate the lymph vessels without compressing them. Sessions are 45 to 60 minutes. Lymphatic drainage is most effective when combined with other recovery strategies including compression, movement, and physiotherapy.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What does lymphatic drainage massage feel like?

Very gentle — it uses light, rhythmic pressure and is nothing like deep tissue massage. Many patients find it deeply relaxing. It is appropriate even in the early post-surgical phase.

After surgery (especially cosmetic or orthopedic), for post-cancer lymphedema, during pregnancy, or for swelling that is not resolving with other treatments.

Post-surgical swelling typically improves in 4 to 8 sessions. Chronic lymphedema may require ongoing maintenance treatment. We assess and advise at your first visit.

Registered massage therapy including lymphatic drainage is covered by most extended health plans. We direct bill.
