Overview
When You Need Postpartum Strengthening
If you are cleared for exercise but do not know where to start, a postpartum strengthening program gives you structure and safety. Many new moms return to high-impact exercise too quickly and develop pelvic floor symptoms, hip pain, or back pain as a result. Whether you are 6 weeks postpartum or 2 years out, it is not too late to rebuild your body the right way.
Signs You Should Come In
- ✔ Medically cleared but unsure how to safely return to exercise
- ✔ Leaking, pain, or heaviness during or after workouts
- ✔ Want to return to running, lifting, or skiing without symptoms
- ✔ Core strength has not returned despite regular activity
- ✔ Ready to train harder but want professional guidance
How It Works
Our Postpartum Strengthening Process
We assess your core function, pelvic floor status, and current fitness level. Your program progresses from foundational exercises to more demanding training as your body adapts. We screen for diastasis recti and pelvic floor dysfunction before increasing load. If either issue is present, we coordinate with our physiotherapist before advancing your program. The goal is to get you back to the activities you love — skiing at Sunshine, trail running on Nose Hill, or lifting with confidence.

Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
When can I start postpartum strengthening?
Most women start around 6 to 8 weeks postpartum after medical clearance. We assess your core and pelvic floor first before progressing your program.
Can I start running after my 6-week check-up?
The 6-week check-up clears you medically — not physically for high-impact activity. We test load tolerance and core/pelvic floor function before progressing to running or jumping.
What if I am still having leaking or pelvic pressure?
We will refer you to pelvic floor physiotherapy or coordinate care alongside your strengthening program. Symptoms should not be trained through.
Is it covered by extended health?
Kinesiology sessions are covered by most extended health plans. We direct bill — call to confirm your coverage.
